I designed this model for the cover illustration of my father’s book on nanoparticles. It represents the structure of SBA-15, a type of mesoporous silica. My first thought when designing the model was to extend Hexagonal Honeycomb by making the tubes longer, but I reckoned the model would use a huge number of units, and decided to design something new from scratch. The Hexagonal Honeycomb II unit I came up with produces tubes of the right proportions, from just a single unit per tube (plus connectors between tubes).
