The base for this tessellation is identical to one of the intermediate steps of folding Lucky Star Tessellation and seems to be something Tomek Siwak also came up with independently. Starting from the base, you just have to pop up the onion/bulb shape.

Looking straight down, you can’t really see that the onions are 3D, but the hexagonal symmetry is emphasized more.
