Newsprint paper is used primarily for printing newspapers, and thus is cheap, thin, and usually of low quality. Its advantages are (or at least used to be while printed daily papers were popular) its availability and large sheet sizes. These properties made it a common choice for traditional models folded by children, such as paper hats.
